Familia Saludable Coordinating Center (FSCC)
The FSCC is housed at Texas A&M University School of Public Health in College Station, TX. It was established to handle all data entry for quantitative data and supervision of all qualitative data. Surveys and focus group activities are planned and prepared by the FSCC. They are translated into Spanish and distributed to the sites along the border for implementation.
Data Management Core
FSCC completed all data entry for AZ, NM, and TX. All data is collected in Spanish and translated into English for entry into a relational database.
Linguistics and Translation Core
All focus groups were recorded in Spanish. Each recording went through four phases to arrive at a final translation in English. Each transcription is listened to twice (Phase 1 and 2) and transcribed into Spanish. The Spanish versions are then translated into English. Each Spanish version is reviewed twice (Phase 3 and 4) to insure the integrity of the data.
Promotora de Salud (Community Health Workers)
The promotoras are the backbone of the SPUSF project. They have a) established trust and rapport among the communities; b) work with vulnerable populations to keep them engaged in programs; c) adapt protocols and instruments for culturally-and linguistically-appropriate measures; d) assisted participants with logistic related challenges such as family, social, employment conflicts, and transportation conflicts; and e) conducted work in a way that is respectful of the community and residents and that possesses the rigor needed for the research study.
